The Urdd Eisteddfod (Youth Festival)

The big events of the year are the Eisteddfod festivals, which are local, regional and national gatherings of children from all over Wales. Children have the opportunity to take part in an ancient Welsh tradition which probably pre-dates the Romans.

The Urdd Eisteddfod is a competition between children of all ages from different schools, colleges and universities throughout Wales and offers a rich insight into Welsh culture and tradition.

If an individual child, or group of children, wins the local Urdd Eisteddfod (organised by Ysgol-y-Dderi this year - 2009), they will be invited to take part in the regional Urdd Eisteddfod. Winners from the regional Urdd Eisteddfod will be invited to take part in the National Urdd Eisteddfod.

Every year there is a different theme and this year it will be "Arwain" (Leading in English).

This year Ysgol y Dderi are organising the local Urdd Eisteddfod which takes place on the 11th March 2009 at Lampeter Secondary School.

The Ceredigion Regional Urdd Eisteddfod will be at Pontrhydfendigaid on Saturday March 28th 2009 at 09:00.

The National Urdd Eisteddfod will be between the 25th and 30th of May 2009 in Cardiff Bay.

At Eisteddfod competitions cover the following: -

  1. Singing
  2. Dancing
  3. Drama and acting
  4. Arts and crafts
  5. Recitals
  6. Poetry Readings

Children from Yr Urdd are invited to take part in the local Eisteddfod, and parents can come along to watch and support.
